Mechanical Maintenance Skills

Technical Training Course: Mechanical Maintenance Skills: pumps, gearboxes, motors and transmission systems: UK Ireland Channel IslandsTo meet the increasing demand for flexible maintenance work-teams, this course is designed to provide personnel with the necessary skills to remedy 80% of typical mechanical breakdowns such as the removal and replacement of equipment (pumps, gearboxes, motors and transmission systems) and to identify bearing faults within these systems.

Who is the course aimed at?

Designed to benefit anyone required to undertake First Line mechanical maintenance this course is not only suitable for craft operatives already involved in maintenance activities but also production operatives.

Course Presentation

The course is predominantly practical using purpose-made rigs. Emphasis is placed on the development of sound practical skill within the bounds of safe working practices. Comprehensive course documentation is provided.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • correctly diagnose a range of mechanical faults and plan a suitable course of action;
  • apply safe working practices and understand the principle of preventative maintenance and what is meant by 1st line maintenance;
  • understand the principles of power transmission systems - recognise, remove and refit/realign taper-lock bushes, keyed shafts, belts, chains and couplings,
  • align shafts, tension drive-train components;
  • understand the function of lubricants and the need to select the correct type for different applications;
  • correctly remove and refit various types of bearings (roller/ball), identify various types and recognise common defects;
  • correctly remove and replace seals, gaskets and gland packing;
  • correctly identify different screw threads;
  • understand the operation of various pumps and state their typical faults and symptoms;
  • understand the operation of various gearboxes and recognise typical faults and symptoms;
  • recognise the common types of conveyor systems and their main components - identify typical faults and correctly remove, replace and track a conveyor belt.

Certification

Successful completion of the course leads to the award of a L.I.T.S. Ltd competence-based certificate.
