Safe Release of Trapped Lift Passengers

Lift Safety Training Course: Safe Release of Trapped Lift Passengers: LITS: UK Ireland Channel IslandsThe Health & Safety Executive emphasises the importance of ensuring that proper arrangements exist for safe (emergency) release of passengers from lift cars which have become immobilised within a lift well/shaft.

The HSE cites BS7255:2001 as the Approved Code of Practice that contains the recommendations/requirements relevant to emergency release procedures and provisions.

In accordance with the British Standard, appropriate training should be provided to all relevant persons and their competence should be assessed and documented ANNUALLY.

This on-site course is designed to meet the recommendations of the HSE and the specific requirements of BS7255.

Who is the course aimed at?

Those who have been designated to perform the safe release of trapped lift passengers by lift owners or those having responsiblity for sites where lifts are installed.

Course Format

The course duration is typically 1 day depending on the range and type of lift equipment. The training is carried out wherever the lift equipment is installed and requires access to such equipment, machine room keys, handwinding notes and equipment, door release keys, lift-out-service signs and entrance guards for practical demonstrations and assessment. A facility to accommodate a maximum of 6 delegates is also required for the supporting classroom-based presentations.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, successful delegates will have demonstrated competence in:

  • understanding employers and employees obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act;
  • applying the Regulations, standards and safety requirements regarding safe working on lifts;
  • understanding the basic drive systems and safety operated lift systems installed on site;
  • understanding the relationship between the weight of car and counterweight, and how to correctly assess the direction which the car will move when the brake is released;
  • locating the car and communicating with trapped passengers;
  • isolating the lift electrical supply, locking off and fitting warning labels;
  • applying the correct method of handwinding traction lifts and/or manually operating hydraulic lifts;
  • using the correct methods of opening and securing landing doors and gates;
  • using the correct method of releasing trapped passengers;
  • leaving the lift in a safe condition after passengers have been released;
  • using the reporting procedures for emergency release of passengers trapped in lifts.
